Fredrik Backman’s — Bear Town *****

Who’d ever thought I’d be giving a novel set around an ice hockey team a five out of five or even read such a book? I asked myself this very question when I began the story, but it didn’t take long to be engulfed in this small town tale that was about a far bigger issue than a junior team aiming to win a national championships.

The general manager of a Scandinavian club has high hopes the team’s win will boost their shrinking town, but when his daughter suffers a brutal attack, the narrow minded town takes sides, and it’s clear that most of them will not empathise with him and his family.

Backman’s list of characters lead us through the events to the final and the consequences of speaking out, even when it’s the truth.
