This title refers to many—the Dayak and Penan peoples of Borneo as well as Michael Palmieri and Bruno Manser. Palmieri, from the U.S. was credited with saving for posterity the ancient artwork of these tribes, but he saved it for the highest bidder who was never a native born Malaysian or Indonesian.
Manser, from Switzerland spent years amongst the Penan within the jungle living a nomadic life, learning their language and hunting with its people. These two men were motivated by different desires—one greed and the other wishing to abandon his materialistic life for one within nature. For Manser, life took on an unexpected turn of events that according to Wikileaks, led to his death caused by the clandestine hands of the Malaysian government while the author has a different view.
This was a compelling read for me, it was especially a gripping tale about Bruno Manser.
