An important historical fiction as well as a gripping tale of three Chinese women from different backgrounds fated to save each other.     

In the late 1800s, Dove first arrives on the west coast of the United States to meet her husband that a Canton matchmaker has arranged for her. She is soon confined to her house and her husband’s business in Lo Sang and not permitted to go anywhere else. Petal has been sold by her father and is on the same ship as Dove, but she is forced into prostitution by the man who purchased her, Headman Sam. She is trapped in Lo Sang’s Midnight Garden where she is forced to service men. Dove is married to Dr Tong who helps both Chinese and whites with their ailments in the same town. They also provide Chinese medicine to the prostitutes in Midnight Garden. When a kidnapping occurs, rivalry between Headman Sam and Headman Yo increases and ends with devastating consequences.
