Miyaz, Julie’s Inuit name, flees from Barrow (now Utqiagvik) to escape from Daniel and heads south towards Point Hope, hoping to work on a ship to San Francisco. Using the skills she learned from her father as a child in the seal camp, she navigates the tundra, but loses her sense of direction. Desperate, she stays close to a pack of wolves hoping to get some food from their hunt otherwise she is going to die.
Although outdated in its use of Eskimo, the book is an insight into life within the Arctic Circle as an Inuit as well as wolf behaviour. A great story.
When Sato wants to divorce his wife, he first seeks the help of a wakaresaseya agent, Kaitaro who is valued for his ability at enticing unwanted wives, and gains evidence to support a husband’s favourable break-up. But when he meets Sato’s wife, Rina, there is something about her that makes him want to turn his back on this job. Forced to take on the assignment, he begins to admire, then fall in love with Rina and plans to do everything he can so she gains a favourable divorce, retains her daughter, and marries him. But something goes wrong, and Rina is found strangled and Kaitaro convicted of murder.

Rose carries a load of baggage that is slowly revealed after her daughter, Juliet tries to commit suicide. She questions what she has done wrong as a mother while defending her actions to her husband, Syd who has done little to support the parenting of their teenage daughter.
