Tracy Chevalier’s — Remarkable creatures *****

When Mary scours the English beaches, she discovers she has an eye for uncovering fossilized skeletons. In an age where women were barred from science, she is viewed as sinful. Only when she befriends Elizabeth who also scours beaches, does she find a like-minded companion.

There are few novels of Chevalier’s that I wouldn’t give a five out of five. She is most well known for her Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Lady and the Unicorn, both equally as good, but this one I rate even higher as the story still remains firmly planted in my memory.

I highly recommend all three. Recently I read her YA novel, New Boy that was also a top read.
