When Kurihara introduces Sakaki to a puzzling blog, so begins what appears to be a series of unconnected murders. Sakaki struggles to decipher the series of mystery drawings left by Yuki who dies during childbirth and finds the husband’s blog does not give any clear answers. The reader is left hanging as the next chapter deals with a drawing done by a kindergarten student, but as each new murder unfolds, the pieces gradually fit together with help from mysterious drawings done by the victims.

When Sato wants to divorce his wife, he first seeks the help of a wakaresaseya agent, Kaitaro who is valued for his ability at enticing unwanted wives, and gains evidence to support a husband’s favourable break-up. But when he meets Sato’s wife, Rina, there is something about her that makes him want to turn his back on this job. Forced to take on the assignment, he begins to admire, then fall in love with Rina and plans to do everything he can so she gains a favourable divorce, retains her daughter, and marries him. But something goes wrong, and Rina is found strangled and Kaitaro convicted of murder.

What made this tale a five out of five read for me was that I had never read anything like it. Piranesi lives in a world where there is only one other human being—the Other. Within his house/world are huge statues in infinite rooms that he explores. The lower rooms are subject to tides that sometimes crash through the corridors. Piranesi is in awe of the Other whom he meets every week for an hour, but when he learns that there is someone else searching for him, the Other warns him of the danger. But will he be in danger? And why are there only two people in this strange world?
While Leiyin observes her own funeral, she is confused as to why she cannot enter into the afterlife. Her two other souls join her on a journey back in time to solve her dilemma. In spite of her unwanted marriage and domineering father, it is her own actions that she must make amends for before she can enter the afterlife.
